The QRP2001 verses the ICOM 725

Warning. The recordings will take a while to download if you have an indifferent link to the Internet.

The recordings below allow you to hear the difference between the QRP2001 and the ICOM725. We used the same antenna for both receivers and adjusted each receiver to the same settings as far as possible. We then took the output of the QRP2001 to the left hand channel of a PC sound card and the ICOM to the right hand channel, and made a stereo recording of the receiver outputs.

Since the receivers were sharing an antenna, we picked fairly strong signals to minimise low-level interference between the two rigs. Unfortunately this means that we can't really show the QRP2001's performance under weak-signal conditions.

To keep the files small, and hence reduce download time over slow connections, we have kept the samples quite short and compressed them (using MP3 compression) as 'WinAmp' format files. Hopefully most people with web access should also have access to suitable software to enable these files to be replayed. If not, please let us know and we'll try to come up with a more common format.

The best way to listen to these files is to use a wave file player such Windows Media Player. Use the balance control to select the RX you want to listen to. Remember, the left channel is the QRP2001 and the right channel is the IC725

The first recording (38KB) is of an SSB signal on the 40m band. The QRP2001 uses its standard 'SSB' bandwidth and the ICOM uses a 2.7 Khz filter.

The second recording (42KB) is of a CW signal, also on 40m. The QRP2001 uses its normal 'CW' bandwidth, the ICOM a 250 Hz filter

We really like the sound of the QRP2001 and hope you do too.
